Why Marco Loves It

‘The Gold of the Valpolicella in the hands of one of the most talented winemakers in Italy’.

Cà Dei Maghi is a small farm in the hills of Valpolicella making very small quantities of the most exquisite wines. Although started in the 1950's, it is only since 2011, when the latest generation of the family took over the reins, that this estate has gone from being 'good' to truly outstanding.

This Amarone is a blend of Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella and Molinara grapes. It has dry tannins perfectly matched to the depth of the fruit. The wine seems to dissolve in the mouth but still with great shape and direction and wonderful fruit notes, typical of the wines of Cà Dei Maghi.

It is unusually accessible for an Amarone, being well-liked by Amarone enthusiasts as well as those who normally shy away from the at-times overpowering style of these magnificent wines.

2016 was legendary, a 5 star vintage in the Valpolicella wine region. I recommend buying multiple bottles, one to drink one straight away and the rest to keep for the future. They will give prestige to your cellar and you will get the opportunity to taste this beautifully evolving wine over the next few years and beyond.

Tasting & Pairing

Tasting notes:

On the nose, you’ll find notes of coffee and plums alongside floral notes and a hint of citrus. A robust juiciness alongside a strong tannic structure comes from the traditional ‘appassimento’ winemaking style in which grapes are dried in order to concentrate sugar. Here, that traditional approach has created a wine with a backbone perfectly balanced between tension and acidity, making this Amarone a unique stand-out. Pair it with meats with strong flavours, like lamb or hare, or anything off the barbeque. Full-flavoured pastas and chocolate are also going to be winning combinations.
