Why Marco Loves It

‘An Arneis unlike any other Arneis on the planet’.

Contrary to popular belief, Piedmont is not just Barolo and Piedmont is not all about red wines. Living proof is the region’s production of this incredible Arneis. If you like Burgundy Chardonnay, you may have found your new wine home.

Tenuta Carretta is a winery located in the south of Piedmont, in Piobesi d’Alba. Thanks to surviving documents, we know the estate traces its history all the way back to 28 November, 1467. Given that long past, it is a winery rich with history and rooted in tradition, but focused on building the future of winemaking. It is, to put it simply, a special place.

Canorei is Tenuta Carretta’s oldest vineyard. The best grapes are selected from this vineyard, vinified, and aged in oak barrels for nine months, followed by another three months of bottle ageing. The result is a powerful, deeply complex white wine that surprises on the tongue. And it suggests that fans of Piedmont should recognise the best the region has to offer goes well beyond its infamous reds.

Tasting & Pairing

Tasting notes:

The idea behind this wine is to show the huge potential of this lesser-known white grape variety. The Arneis grape, soil, old vines, and the winemaker’s touch contribute to creating a real gem in the glass, showing a deep straw-yellow colour with golden highlights. On the nose, the bouquet evokes aromas of vanilla, white flowers, honey and exotic fruit. Warm and enveloping in the mouth, the palate has a perfect level of acidity that confers freshness and persistence. While true of any white, given this wine’s unusual strength it is important to not serve it too cold. The Arneis gives its best around 10-12°C.
