Sommeliers might not have a favourite wine, but every sommelier has a wine that best represents themself. Marchesale from Terre del Marchesato is mine.
Bolgheri wines are the wines I grew up with; their vibrant character and strength always remind me of “home”. This wine has all the power of a Super-Tuscan with the grace, elegance, and warmth of a well-balanced wine.
Maurizo Fuselli has continued to build on the vast knowledge he gained while working for Antinori winemaker Guado al Tasso. Maurizo transformed his family’s land into a progressive vineyard, and by using some of the most advanced techniques he started producing the most elegant wines of Bolgheri.
The Fuselli family’s passion and love is evident in their wines. Grapes are harvested by hand in small crates. Selection is done in two stages both in the vineyard and the winery to bring only the best grapes to vinification. Alcoholic fermentation happens in stainless steel vessels between 24-26°C , followed by post-fermentation maceration. The wine is matured in French barriques, then sits for twelve more months after bottling in order to fully balance itself prior to release.
Marchesale is a wine that represents tradition: blending Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. While ready to drink now, those looking to age will find a wine continuing to evolve if left to rest for a few more years.
Tasting & Pairing
Tasting notes:
Marchesale is a deep ruby colour. On the nose, you can smell black fruits like blackberries and currants as well as balsamic notes, mint and black pepper. On the palate, notes of chocolate come through with a balanced structure and long finish. Powerful and elegant, this wine is the perfect pairing for a nice steak or ribs. And vegetarians will not be disappointed either, as Marchesale is a dream when paired with an eggplant parmesan or aged cheeses.
