Why Rachele Loves It

Viña Vik is one of the best known producers in Chile's magnificent Cachapoal Valley. Located at the foothills of the Andes mountains, Viña Vik is, quite simply, stunning, spanning some of the most spectacular geography you could ask for. Vik wines exemplify a deep appreciation of the nature that surrounds as you stand among the vines. A respect for biodiversity and crystal-clear understanding of the land enables the Vik team to produce grapes able to fully reflect the terroir.

Milla Cala is made from different plots across the Vik property. The ideal combination of terroir, rootstock and clone is specifically sought for each variety of grape. Every year, the blend is changed based on that year’s growth and the availability of top-quality grapes. The grapes are harvested at night and sorted, first by hand then through the use of cutting-edge equipment, to ensure each individual grape meets the winemaker’s desired standards.

After sorting, the grapes undergo a few days of cold maceration to allow greater colour extraction. The wine is finished by maturing for 20 months in French barriques. The result is a truly exceptional representation of the best of Chilean wine, and the marriage of Latin American grapes and terroir with Old World style.

Tasting & Pairing

Tasting notes:

Milla Cala is a deep dark red-purple in colour. On the nose, it shows black cherries and plums as well as notes of wood, liquorice and eucalyptus. The French oak provides elegant secondary flavours and a gentle structure. The velvety tannins and silky mouthfeel are surrounded with delicate herbaceous aromas, creating the perfect Chilean blend. We recommend a lot of the usual suspects for pairing a wine of this power and complexity, from steak and venison to blue cheese and dark chocolate. It’s also a fantastic wine to enjoy on its own with good friends and good music.
